From a series depicting castes and occupations of South India: six folios with three husbands and wives. Trichinopoly, circa 1870. Watercolour on European manufactured paper. Each approx 16 x 10cm
These paintings represent the later phase of the Anglo-Indian (or 'Company School') style with watercolour used in the Western manner. These figures no longer look they are made of line drawings with opaque infills: they have no thin black outine and flat planes of colour are replaced by washes of colour often blending into each other.
