Lady at a Shivalingam shrine . Anglo-Indian or "Company school" at Patna, circa 1880. Attributed here to Bani Lal or his workshop. Opaque watercolour on paper. 23.4cm by 17.2cm
Paintings of Indian peoples' trades and occupations by Bani Lal (1850-1901) brought together Provincial Mughal painting's attention to minute detail with European perspective as seen in the river, boats and banks flanked by hills on a distant horizon. His work is highly regarded with examples in British public collections such as the V&A Museum and British Library.
