Couple in a pavioion seated on a bed in the sexual asana of Phanabhritpasha. Nepal, Bhaktapur, circa 1700. Opaque watercolour with gold on treated cloth. 17.4 x 17.4cm
This posture, 'The Knot of the Hooded One', is descibed in the 'Ratiratnapradipika' (said to have been composed by Maharaja Prauadha Devaraya of Vijayanagara r.1422-66): "When your lover passes her arms under her raised thighs and twines her fingers together behind your neck, pulling your face down to be kissed".
