A tilkayat and gosain (head priest and priest) perform arati (lamp ceremony) to Shri Nathji at his shrine during summer. Nathdwara, mid-19th century. Gouache, gold and silver on wasli. 25.5 x 16.6cm
The occasion is a summer festival or ceremony since Sri Nathji wears a white adabhanda tied to his left at the hip.The tilakayat on Sri Nathji's right performs arati (ritual waving of lamps), whilst the gosain waves a peacock-feather fan. The use of gold to embellish Shri Nathji's jewellery is quite unusual, tin alloy (for silver) being more common around this time.
