Folio from a dispersed unidentified manuscript: nata and bhata. Mewar, circa 1800. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 17 x 25.3cm
The text has numerous references to nata and bhata (itinerant dancers/performers/singers), also a couple of names: Janakadi (janaka etc.) and Shivamala, the daughter of someone called Shivkumar. There is also a nata avatara who gradually learns their art.
With thanks to the kindness of Tarun Pant for his translation and commentary.
