Portrait of the horse Tez Hava ('Brisk - or Fresh - Air') from the royal stables of Maharana Ari Singh. Mewar, 1765. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 24.1 x 26.8cm
Ari Singh catalogued the many royal elephants and horses in individual portraits with the reverse inscribed with their name. Significantly that of the groom is not mentioned. On the reverse written with ink in English is an incorrect atttribution of Malwa.
With thanks to the kindness of Rosemary Crill for translation of the horse's name and recorded date.
