Scene from a Shiva Purana. Shiva, Parvati, their vahanas (mounts/vehicles) and Andhaka asura. Mewar. Gouache on warqa. Circa 1820-40. 13.3 x 10.2cm
The demon may very well be 'Andhaka'/ 'Andhakaasura'. The name 'andhaka' is derived from 'andhakaara' (darkness). Te story goes that the world was plunged into darkness when Parvati playfully sneaked up from behind and covered Shiva's eyes. It was during this time that the demon was born.
I would like to express my gratitude to Tarun Pant for the above information.
