Folio from a Ramayana: Rama and Lakshmana with Hanuman to the rear stand before defeated Ravana and asura (demon) army , his donkey-driven chariot now standing idle. Marwar, circa 1780. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 19.2 x 32cm
From the same Ramayana series as Christie's 10.10.1989 lot 46, Sotheby's 22.4.1999 lot 321.
In the upper border is written in the form of a doha (couplet):
Then Rama mercifully provided his darshan (revealed himself to the gaze of Ravana).
He guided the asura (Ravana) toward the path of mukti (salvation). Such was the character of Raghurai (one of many names of Rama)."
I would like to express my gratitude to Tarun Pant for kindly translating the text.
