Ramayana illustration: the sage Vishvamitra on arrival at Ayodhaya is received by King Dasaratha in his palace as a raja and his retinue follow to celebrate the birth of sons to the king. Mandi, circa 1760-80. Opaque watercolour on wasli, the reverse with inscription; attached a cover sheet bearing the seal of the Mandi royal library. 28.4 x 41cm
The ramayana represented by this folio must have been commissioned by Raja Shamser Sen or his son Surma Sen. It is likely no coincidence that the raja dressed in a yellow jama arriving on horseback attended by a huqqa bearer bears a strong likeness to contemporary portraits of Shamser Sen.
