Folio from a Bhagavata Purana: the demon Salwa's army attacks the city of Dvaraka. Malwa, circa 1700-1725. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 20 x 37cm

In this illustration of chapter 10, canto 76, Salwa attacks Dvaraka, the fortified city of the Yadus, his sworn enemy. A monumental battles ensues with countless arrows fired in each direction - by Salwa's army from the air (via an indestructable metal flying fort which is able by command to appear and disappear) and by the Yadas from their Dvaraka fort.

Thanks to the kindness of Tarun Pant for identifying the folio illustration, text and corresponding text in the Bhagavata Purana.
