Folio from a Rasikapriya: Indrajit Singh before Vishnu. Malwa, circa 1660. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 22.8 x 16.7cm

Provenance: the private collection of the Swiss artist and pioneering scholar in the field of Indian art history, Dr Alice Boner (1889-1981)

Indrajit Singh was the younger brother of Maharaja Ranashah of Orccha, and also the patron of Keshavadasa who wrote the Rasikapriya for him.  We see Indrajit with hands in the gesture of supplication to Vishnu with emblematic  crescent-tipped arrow.

In the translation by Bahadur, K R, 1972, p.4:

And pious young brother was Indrajit Singh, whom Visnu gave
A generous mind, and body strong,
Success in war, and all that makes
    A noble man
