Folio from a Rasikapriya: Mugdha Nayika. Malwa, circa 1660. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 22.8 x 16.7cm

Provenance: the private collection of the Swiss artist and pioneering scholar in the field of Indian art history, Dr Alice Boner (1889-1981)

An illustration of Mugdha Nayika, the Rasikapriya of Keshav Das. In the translation by Bahadur, K R, 1972, p.28:

    At first the mugdha does not lie
    Beside her lover, but when she is
    By her maid* persuaded to comply,
    No rapture vies with the one she gives.
    'Twas only when a million oaths;
    He swore, that she did courage take
    With him to lie...

*The term maid here fits that of of a confidante (in this instance acting as a go-between) rather than a maidservant

Thanks to the kindness of Tarun Pant for identification of the manuscript and translation of inscription.
