From a series of Vishnu avataras: Vyasa. Jaipur, circa 1860. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 25.4 x 20.4cm
Vyasa is more uncommonly seen in miniature paintings even than Haygriva, currently also available for sale in these galleries. Vishnu's function in this avatara (incarnation) is to educate and dispel ignorance, and it is also said that Vishnu not only dispels the cosmos of evil, but as Vyasa also punishes the wicked.
