Folio from a ragamala series: Shri Raga. Jaipur, circa 1820. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 16.6 x 12.8cmOn the back of this refined painting is a hand-written English description correctly naming the raga, but is othewise rather fanciful excepting the mention of a 'lady' although she is hadrdly likely to in recitation given that the arts of the ragamala - music, poetry and painting - are separate from each other. Standard iconography has shri - literally 'lord' - and consort listening to musicians one of whom is often a kinnera - horse-headed heavenly musician, as here.
