Folio from a ragamala series: Malavi Ragini. Jaipur, circa 1820. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 16.6 x 12.8cm
On the back of this refined painting is a hand-written English description correctly naming the ragini although being only partially correct thereafter, in second part's reference to her abandon and his arousal. Its iconography has lovers walking to a bedchamber, as here. The maid making up the bed is however not standard iconography. It is sometimes known as Gaudi Ragini.Ref: 000567
