Shiva's realm, Kailasa . Jaipur, circa 1880. Opaque watercour with gold on wasli. 14 x 18.9cm
Shaivites ascend to Kailasa after they die. Whilst Kailasa itdelf is a forbidding, icy wasteland, romantic depictions were popular and continue to be so. In this we see a large number of Shivadota (Shiva's minions) as well as a variety of Bhairava deities, each responsible for a different aspect of the vast realm.Amongst the packed detail and action is, at lower mid-left, a Shivadoota fighting off a Yamadota (one of Yama's demons) in order to claim the devout soul for Kailasa.
I would like to express my gratitude to Tarun Pant for providing information relating to Kailasa.
