Folio from a dispersed ragamala series: Bhairavi Raga. Jaipur, circa 1840-60. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 27 x 19.7cm
Iconography: Bhairavi as Shiva sits on a daybed surrounded by female attendants who prepare and apply cooling sandlawood paste to his skin, fan him with morchal (fan of peacock feathers) and play music. In this way his profoundly fierce nature is placated.
