Folio from a Baramasa series: the month of Phalguna. Jaipur, circa 1850. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 33.6 x 24.8cm
Holi is celebrated during Phalguna, as shown here. The text (in doha-kavit format) in the upper panel desribes how the partipants - who according to festival tradition spray coloured water and throw coloured powder at each other - have lost all their inhibitions.
With thanks to the kindness of Tarun Pant for his summary of the text.
