Ragamala illustration: Vasant Ragini. Jaipur kalam at Baroda. Mid-19th century. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. Folio 35.5 x 26cm, image 23 x 16cm
This finely painted ragamala is from a series produced by a Jaipuri artist at Baroda in Gujarat. Others from the series have been published by Baroda Museum. Many Jaipur artists migrated to Bikaner during the 19th century, where their kalam came to dominate over that which had been established. Here is evidence that their spread was not confined to Bikaner.
