Fragment from a Jain Tantric manuscript of the Samaranganasutradhara. Rajasthan, 19th century. Opaque watercolour on paper. 12.8 x 23.3cm
This diagram illustrates the concept of eternal recurrence of the sevenfold divisions of the universe as a cosmic river of time and reality. This form of a "river" typically has the head or heads of a serpent. Two similar illustrations are to be found in the exhibition catalogue Tantra from the Haywood Gallery, London in 1971 (Arts Council of Great Britain, cat. 277, 278)
