Folio 20 from a dispersed Jain Kalpasutra manuscript: the birth of Mahavira and the lustration of Mount Meru by multiples of Indra. Jaipur, circa late 18th century. Opaque watercolour with gold on warqa. 11.2 x 25.4 cm
Two folios from a strikingly similar dispersed manuscript held by Yale University Art Gallery with their folio 19 following on from rather than preceding this episode indicating either a mistake in narrative sequence or that more than one manuscript was produced. The two Yale folios are illustrated in the Rubin Museum of Art exhibition catalogue Victorious Ones: Jain Images of Perfection, Phyllis Granoff (Ed.), 2009; Robert J Del Bonta, 'Life Scenes: The Kalpa Sutra', pp. 244-247. Del Bonta informs that only a few folios are known and represent a rare departure from the expected formulaic paintings and scenes found in Kalpa Sutra manuscripts and that its illustrations are identified by short sentences in Gujarati written in Devangari script.
Thanks to the kindness of Robert Del Bonta for his identification of this folio and also the information above.
