Folio from a Shripala* manuscript: whilst picturing her beauty the prince plays a vina. Gujarat, circa 1700. Opaque watercolour on warqa. 11.7 x 27.3cm
*A Jain legend in verse about Shripala, king of Malwa. The text refers to a guru and prince with a flair for music gazing (or picturing as we see nobody to meet his gaze) at the beauty of the maiden and a guru, from the lower register probably his master musician/teacher.
I would like to express my gratitude to Tarun Pant for identifying the folio as Jain and subsequently Robert Del Bonta for identifying the manuscript and each folio.
