Equestrian portrait of Maharawat Nahar Singh with footmen in attendance. Devgarh, 1832 . Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 34.7 x 23.2cm

The inscription on the reverse states that it is Maharawat Nahar Singh on his horse Pran Pyara ( lit. 'as dear to one as life itself'). The inscription contains a date - samwat 1889, i.e 1832. There are references to donations of poshak and kapda ( both meaning 'dress'or clothes in general); chitaro baijnath (painter Baijnath). 
The text was inscribed by Baba Jawan Singh ( baba jawan singh raa aakhar- 'Bbaba Jawan Singh's words'). Names of Nahar Singh's attendants have also been included.
