Princess with ladies in attendance with a prince or nobleman riding an elephant under moonlight, led by a torch-bearer. Bikaner, circa 1800. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 24.9 x 17.4cm
Research published in recent years tells how from the late 18th century onwards inreasing numbers of artists migrated from Jaipur to Bikaner. An early fusion of styles was wholly dominated by the Jaipur kalam by the late 19th century. Here we see an example of the early-mid period, with emphatic Mughalised elements such as landscape detail, muted colours and an interest in the play of light during a moonlit night.
