The Jagannath trio - Krishna, Balabhadra (Balabhadra) and sister Subadhra. Awadh, circa 1830. Gouache and gold on wasli. 18.7 x 11.6cm
Apart from the famous Jagannath temple at Puri there were (and are) long-established temples around the former state of Awadh at Behta Buzurg and the village of Ankui near Bithoor.
Wasli is specially made for miniature paintings by bonding sheets of hand-made paper with wheat-glue then burnishing it smooth.
