Folio from a Bhagavata Purana Rukmini Harana episode: Rukmi at the ready to shoot arrows at Krishna. Awadh, circa late 18th century. Opaque watercolour with gold on wasli. 28 x 18.8cm
In canto 10 chapter 54 Rukmi seethes so much with resentment at the thought of his sister Rukmini's marriage to Krishna that he conspires to confront him, announcing that he aims to use his bow to shoot Krishna. The point in the narrative in which Rukmi takes aim is illustrated in the painting here. What follows is Rukmi engages Krishna in battle only to find he has more than met his match. Eventually Krishna is the victor and when Rukmi is about to be put to the sword Rukmini begs successfully for his life to be spared.
